Review: Timberborn

What would happen if all of humanity went extinct and beavers became the next step in evolution? Timberborn shows us that Earth would be in good hands.

THE GAME

Timberborn is a city builder developed and distributed by Mechanistry. A drought caused by mankind was the cause of its own undoing. However, nature always finds a way to carry on and some species have adapted and created large cities. Timberborn puts you in charge of a society of beavers that must survive the dry spells, creating a solid foundation for its citizens to stay alive, comfortable and happy. Build your city, move mountains, tame the water and keep your beavers healthy so they can survive another day.

O começo de uma grande sociedade.
The beginning of a great society.

MY IMPRESSIONS

Building cities is always fun and enjoyable. In Timberborn it would be no different. It's a well-made game, with mechanics that seem complex but are easy and fun to pick up. You feel excited about increasing the size of your city, and before you know it, hours have passed. Structures are being unlocked and the curiosity to use them moves you to continue expanding.

The game is still in early access and receives updates frequently. At the moment, we can play with two beaver factions, which have unique characteristics and builds. With drought cycles, beavers always need to prepare for the next one, stocking up on food and water, creating ways to stay alive until the arid period is over.

When starting a new map, a range of ideas will come to mind. Where to build your city and how to place buildings efficiently will be valid concerns, as it makes a huge difference. The vertical buildings above the river make the sky the limit for your imagination. The game is in Portuguese-Brazil, which greatly facilitates the understanding of structures. For those of you who love to build, we even have a map editor mode.

The objective of the game is simple: survive. There are no big goals here. Some will feel it lacks a greater purpose, however, the whole idea of the game is city building. And Timberborn does it very well.

Muito satisfatório ver um cidade funcional.
Very satisfying to see a functional city.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Unfortunately, the game has no achievements so far. Since it's in early access, we can expect something in the future. It would be a great addition to the game, in my opinion, as it would add an extra appeal to those looking for a challenge.

Castores também tem happy hour.
Beavers also has happy hour.

CONCLUSION

Timberborn is a very fun and well-made game. Although simple, it will hook you for a long time. Each update improves the quality of life even more, which shows how concerned the developers are with their game and players. I dare say that the game will have twice as much content as it has today. Everything is well thought out and made with care.

Despite the repetition of cycles, the game does not get tiring. You'll always want to keep building and improving your city until the next drought hits. And every time it's different, because the game propels you forward in a light way that makes you explore and make mistakes. And you'll make a lot of mistakes, flooding everything or making all your beavers die, but it's all part of learning, which is easy and fast.

The game won't require much of you and caring for your beavers will be therapeutic. It's worth checking out the game and where it's headed. The developers are well on their way to making Timberborn something memorable and enjoyable to play.
