Review: This Means Warp

Grab your friends and travel aboard your ship in search of exploring space in This Means Warp.

THE GAME

This Means Warp is a ship management game developed by Outlier and distributed by Jagex Ltd. Gather your crew and try to survive your space travels, whether alone or with up to three friends. Improve your ship and create your own strategy to defeat the different enemies that try to destroy your ship. And if that happens, don't worry: you'll come back stronger for a new adventure.

MY IMPRESSIONS

I love cooperative management games. Couple that with Faster Than Light and you have This Means Warp. Fun is guaranteed and so is difficulty. It's a very intuitive and simple game to understand, but very difficult to advance without due care. Because it's a game with levels and progression, it's understandable that you lose a lot of times, but I didn't think it was so fair. In my first run, when advancing to the next galactic system, when I came across the first enemy, he obliterated me without me being able to even try to defend myself. Was I unlucky or was the game designed that way so you can play and progress at a slower pace? This is my only reservation, as all other aspects are well done. The game is in Portuguese-Brazil, which helps you understand the descriptions of weapons and items clearly.

The visual style is pleasant and the characters are charismatic. Playing with friends makes everything more fun and chaotic, without losing clarity in your actions. There is a good variety of items in the game, which can also be improved with improvements that you earn by defeating enemies. Every match will be unique, so maybe you'll be lucky to find that powerful weapon or you'll be unlucky and destroyed in your first battle. The game's bots are well programmed and you can select exactly what you want them to do. So, if you don't have friends, fear not, bots are there to save you.

ACHIEVEMENTS

I hope you have time, because you're going to need it. Achievements are quite complicated when it comes to achieving 100% of them. We go from simple ones like leveling up or spending money in the store, to more complicated ones like obtaining prestige or completing the game on the hardest difficulty. It will take a lot of tries, so don't get frustrated.

CONCLUSION

Finally someone put two good things together and something good came out. This Means Warp two completely different gameplay styles and presents something fun and challenging. Without a doubt, if you play with your friends, you will always want to go further and further in each run. The simplicity that the game brings is great, as it is a cooperative game, it is best that it is intuitive and easy to learn so that everyone can enjoy the game.

I love co-op games, and when I see one coming out I always take a look at its core idea to see new and fun things. This Means Warp is one of those games, which risks combining roguelite with cooperative management and achieves a very good result.
