Review: The Star Named EOS

Every photo has a story. What’s behind the lens in The Star Named EOS?

THE GAME

The Star Named EOS is a point and click and puzzle game developed by Silver Lining Studio and distributed by PLAYISM. In control of Dei, a young photographer, we experience a little bit of his life. Dei's mother, who is traveling, sends letters and photographs so that her son can retrace her steps and try to reproduce the photos sent. With that, our young photographer embarks on a journey visiting every corner his mother has been to, guided by her photos. What will Dei discover on this journey?

MY IMPRESSIONS

From the same developers as Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery, The Star Named EOS follows the same idea as the previously mentioned title. You navigate through a scenario with a 360º view and interact with objects in order to solve puzzles and advance in the story. It's a very simple game, but it wins you over with its narrative. Unfortunately, the game is not in Brazilian Portuguese, which may put some players off, because what captivates you in this game is precisely the story and, if you don't understand English, this may put you off playing.

Some parts of the game have voice acting, which gives you the exact emotion of what is happening, dictating the atmosphere of the game that, in many cases, will give you goosebumps. The art is so beautiful. Since Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery, what stands out most in games by Silver Lining Studio is the art, which is captivating and cozy. Having a camera as the central tool encourages you to take photos of all the scenarios, since they are so beautiful.

I can't go into too much detail about the plot and story because the game is short and that would ruin the whole experience. In fact, many will think that the short length is a flaw, but games in this style generally don't last too long, I think because of the detail in the art and animation and the way it is placed throughout the game. Still, it's a game to be admired for its effort and beauty.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Most of the achievements can be earned by playing through to the end of the story. However, there are some achievements that require you to perform specific actions, such as photographing something in particular or solving a puzzle in as few moves as possible. Don't worry about this, I recommend playing the game for the first time without seeking these specific achievements and enjoying what the game has to offer. Once you finish the story, you can access all the chapters through the game menu and go after the achievements you missed. It's quite easy to get 100% of the achievements.

CONCLUSION

We can describe The Star Named EOS as an incredible artistic experience. The entire game environment is pleasing to the eye and full of life. Since it is in 360º view, it creates situations where you don't expect something to be happening behind you. Playing with headphones is highly recommended, since the sound also works in 360º and immerses you in the experience. Despite being short, the game delivers what it promises. It doesn't need more than its length to tell the story. Once again, Silver Lining Studio deserves congratulations for a very beautiful game with an engaging story.
