Review: Starship Troopers: Extermination

Starship Troopers is with me since I was a kid, I think many people have watched this hit on TV Globo. With failures in sequels, the franchise never managed to repeat the success of the last movie, but in games it has been different, with a good strategy game released in recent years, the franchise now ventures into the FPS genre, but so what? did it work?

Starship Troopers: Extermination was developed and published by Offworld Industries, a developer that had a good experience with FPS games. As such, we believe Starship Troopers: Extermination was a great way to expand this fun universe that originated in the novels by Robert A. Heinlein.

The game is available on the following platform: PC via Steam

Visual

It is worth noting that Starship Troopers: Extermination is a beautiful game, which is very faithful to the movie franchise, but suffers from several optimization problems. At times, the game was hitting 20FPS on an RTX 3090 at the time we were reviewing it. Even though there are performance issues, the game's good visuals initially showed great potential for diverse maps and more varied biomes that may appear in the full version of the game. Unfortunately, it is still too early to criticize the game in this respect.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay of Starship Troopers: Extermination is extremely attractive, intense and fun. It is a lot of fun to build bases and sit on the damn bugs of the franchise. You must choose between three classes: Bastion, Hunter, and Operator. There is a rank progression system, one of rank and one for classes, which gives you access to the primary, secondary and accessory weapons of the rank.

If you play two or three matches, you can have fun, but what about after that? The current state of the game is raw, with only one map for the main mode, which has three modes: defend and attack a base, capture a flag, and collect minerals in the scenario, and it seems that the players don't know what to do with it yet, so it seems that everyone gets a bit lost in the middle of the vastness of the desert sands. But at least the game uses creativity to switch between different positions on the map to give the feeling of greater variety of options.

ACHIEVEMENTS

There were still no achievements to be had in the game at the time of this review. As it is an early access game, they will probably be added in the future.

CONCLUSÃO

It seems to be hard to review Starship Troopers: Extermination. It looks like it will be a good game someday. Maybe the early access will last a few good years, because the game is quite fun, but it is still very incomplete, lacking maps, customizations, optimization and many things that a good game should have. It even seems that the game needed to come out to test its audience and we believe that this may have been successful, since it has good reviews on Steam. However, it is undeniable that, although fun, it is an incomplete game.
