Review: Schim

Schim is a platform and exploration game in which we assume the role of a shadow. Our only way of moving is by jumping between the shadows of objects around us, creating a unique and engaging dynamic.

GAMEPLAY / VISUAL

Undoubtedly, the visual aspect of Schim is one of the game's most highlighted points. Each type of setting is stunningly well-made, despite its simplicity. The gameplay also deserves attention, as there is nothing quite like what we see in Schim. We are put in the role of a "shadow" that more closely resembles a frog, jumping from shadow to shadow, and we need to complete a story of self-reunion, from our human's childhood to their work-related problems.

Surprisingly, Schim has an interesting story background that does not interfere with the gameplay at any point.

Perhaps the only drawback is that the game takes a little while to pick up at the beginning. Almost every object we enter as a shadow is interactive and has its own animation. The number of objects in Schim is huge, although it becomes repetitive in some moments closer to the end of the game.

Schim offers extremely high-quality gameplay and a lot of diversity, something that is really lacking in many games.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The vast majority of the game's achievements are attainable and some are even creative. However, what somewhat hampers the experience of achievements are the collectibles in all the levels. In this regard, I believe the company misjudged what players truly appreciate in these games. It is much more beneficial to include challenges like the Hole in One achievement in the golf course, rather than requiring the collection of three extremely hidden items per stage. This type of achievement forces players, who play to complete all achievements, to finish the game with a guide open next to them, which ends up compromising the game experience a bit.

Resume

Schim is a delight. Without a doubt, it is an extremely well-made game, with a unique gameplay mechanic and its own style. We cannot classify it solely as a puzzle game, although it contains elements of that genre. The game stands out more for world exploration and story contemplation than anything else. Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to experience many good indie games this year, but without a doubt, Schim stands out as one of them.
