Review: Rough Justice '84

Many crimes, little time and resources. Send your best agents to solve cases throughout the city.

THE GAME

Rough Justice: '84 is a resource management and puzzle game developed by Gamma Minus UG and distributed by Daedalic Entertainment. Lead a private security agency, hiring agents and guiding them on missions that suit them best. Manage your resources, because if you're not careful, your agency will go bankrupt. Buy equipment for your agents to help with their missions and solve puzzles to successfully complete the challenges. Do whatever it takes to make your agency a success.

MY IMPRESSIONS

We need to understand Rough Justice: '84 as a single-player board game. Initially, everything will be fresh and new, but it soon becomes repetitive. And this is a big problem with games like this. Furthermore, the dice rolling system brings a recurring problem: frustration. For me, every dice rolling system in digital games doesn't work. Even though, even in real life, rolling dice is simply luck, digitally, you don't get that same feeling. I really have no idea how to make systems like this satisfactory, but I know it frustrates me a lot.

The game even has a backstory, but it goes largely unnoticed. It has a lot of text, but after a while, you don't even care anymore, as most of the missions don't even have any connection or importance with the story. You will do it simply to gain more resources. Unfortunately, the game is not in Portuguese-Brazil, which can make the game tiring due to the amount of text. The game's art is very beautiful, with well-designed characters and references to the time.

The puzzles are well done, but they soon tire you through repetition. Note that repetition is the biggest mistake in this game, but the biggest culprit is the lack of satisfaction in doing certain actions repeatedly. As much as you can play it in small doses, it's not a game that makes you want to come back several times to play.

ACHIEVEMENTS

As the entire game is based on repeating missions over and over again, logically the achievements follow the same line of reasoning. For each type of mission, you will have to repeat it 250 to 500 times. Recruiting and leveling up your agents are also achievements here. Realize that you will have to play a lot and repeat many actions, which is neither an easy nor a pleasant task. It feels like it was just made to keep players forcefully playing to complete all the achievements. Good luck to anyone who has the patience to try.

CONCLUSION

Maybe Rough Justice: '84 isn't a game for everyone. Especially for those who are short on time. In addition to the unsatisfactory repetition, the game itself fails to shine after an hour of play. Although the idea was good, the execution left something to be desired. It's a shame, because the developers had something good to work on, but it became a board game that you leave on the shelf collecting dust after playing it a few times. Unfortunately, the game didn't hold my attention. Aside from the repetitive gameplay, there was nothing that kept me playing the game. However, like I said, maybe Rough Justice: '84 isn't for me.
