Review: Krzyżacy - The Knights Of The Cross

How about experiencing a 15th century battle between the Polish-Lithuanian army and the Teutonic Knights? That's what you'll find in Krzyżacy - The Knights Of The Cross.

THE GAME

Krzyżacy - The Knights Of The Cross is a deckbuilder RPG developed by Olive Panda Studio and distributed by Neverland Entertainment and Olive Panda Studio. The story of the game tells about the struggle of the Polish-Lithuanian people against the Teutonic knights in the 15th century. In control of a knight of this time, recruit members for your team and battle using cards that, when forming combos, generate different attack effects of your companions. Build your deck and get ready to face different challenges.

The whole story is based on a Nobel Prize winning book.

MY IMPRESSIONS

I confess that I got lost playing Krzyżacy. It gives me the impression of a game made for mobile, but maybe that's just the style of it and how things are laid out on the screen. Despite being inspired by a renowned book, I couldn't get excited about the story. It didn't arrest me, much less make me care about any character that came along.

And speaking of characters, I must point out that there is a good variety of warriors at your disposal, each one with its own characteristics that open up a wide range of combos and synergies for your team. And since most of the recruited characters are only explored in their side quests, you get attached more to the look than the personality.

As for the art of the game, it is very beautiful and very animated with its 2D graphics. Let's say that they invested even too much in some animations, in particular, in the movement of the female characters' chests. It even becomes appealing. This is so evident that there is a free DLC that transforms the art of the game into something more realistic for those who want to be more immersed in the historical context.

The deck building part is nothing amazing, almost uninspired. Little variety of cards and some of them are not worth using, like the single-use cards, which are not strong enough to be worth putting in your deck.

The game has the story replay factor to follow other paths and even a roguelite mode for those who just want to embark on a quick game. I found Krzyżacy pretty average, almost forgettable. I couldn't have fun playing, mostly because of the general mechanics that aren't very exciting.

ACHIEVEMENTS

All achievements are linked to side stories and main story. You'll have to play through the main campaign a few times, making different choices to unlock different paths, thus completing some achievements. For side stories, recruit characters to trigger your quests. Always remember to do all available side quests before proceeding with the main story.

Always try to activate the ultimate of your teammates.

CONCLUSION

I'll be honest when I say that Krzyżacy didn't get me. Maybe the combination of a story based on a renowned book and a design taken from an anime didn't work. And yes, I'm excluding the fact that there's a DLC that changes that, because I'm considering how the game was conceived. This DLC looks more like a way to fix something that didn't please a portion of the players than really something that was thought of for the final product.

The game itself is very basic, the cards don't have much variety, much less excite. They were made thinking about character combos, but this is far from good. There is even a skill tree for the main character, but that goes unnoticed, as well as many aspects of the game, which seem just dropped, without much emphasis.

Krzyżacy is very average, which even causes a certain difficulty for those who like this style of game, but which is not very exciting. Everything seems to be very raw, something is missing. That's the feeling of something playing.
