Review: Gladiator Guild Manager

Assemble your gladiator guild and enter the arenas to consecrate your warriors.

THE GAME

Gladiator Guild Manager is a strategy and management game developed by Entertainment Forge and distributed by GrabTheGames, Gamera Games and UpgradePoint. As command of a warrior guild, you will recruit, train and equip your gladiators to be prepared for battle. Once inside the arena, position your fighters to face enemies in different challenges, whether outnumbered or against powerful warriors. Additionally, fulfill factions' requests and face powerful enemies, but remember: helping one may not please the other.

MY IMPRESSIONS

I'll start with a warning: it's addictive. Once you get into the game, you won't want to stop. The pace of the game is good and doesn't leave you doing nothing, however, I feel that, after many cycles within the game, everything becomes very repetitive. As long as you're discovering things and trying out the different types of warriors, it's a lot of fun. The game's difficulty is very adaptable for all types of players. The game is in Portuguese-Brazil, which helps a lot in understanding the items, skills and missions, for example.

Gladiator Guild Manager, combining aesthetics with gameplay, reminds me a lot of the browser games we played as kids on gaming websites. That idea of a simple yet addictive game that attracted us so much and made us spend afternoons playing. Battles occur automatically, with the player being able to prioritize which enemy to attack, which is crucial to winning some battles. The item and skill mechanics make everything much more varied, with very interesting combinations. Adding up all these factors, I say again, you won't notice time passing while playing.

ACHIEVEMENTS

We have very varied achievements here. In addition to the more basic ones, such as defeating a certain number of enemies, for example, some achievements are related to missions given by the factions, which direct you to fights against bosses. Each boss defeated is an achievement, in this case. Additionally, we have speedrun achievements and difficulties, which may not appeal to most players, but will provide a great challenge. As you can see, it's not easy to complete 100% of the achievements and, if you try, it will take you a considerable amount of time to complete.

CONCLUSION

Gladiator Guild Manager is the typical game to play without commitment. Although it is possible to adjust the game's difficulty to something more difficult, the game itself is very simple and does not demand much from the player, even when it comes to management. The evolution curve of the characters added to the time that passes within the game cadences its rhythm and makes you play without stopping. Still, I see that simplicity here is a double-edged sword, because just as it attracts you due to its ease, it soon pushes you away due to its lack of novelty.

Version 1.0 was released close to the date I wrote this text. If we compare the game that was in early access for 3 years and its current version, we see great progress, with many corrections and polishes, things that have changed the player's experience for the better. I hope they continue to add content to the game, as I see great potential to continue improving this fun game.
