Review: For The King 2

Gather your best adventurers to brave Fahrul in search of the people's salvation in For The King 2.

THE GAME

For The King 2 is a roguelite RPG developed by IronOak Games and distributed by Curve Games. By joining forces with evil forces, Queen Rosomon, who was once loved by her people, forces them into servitude in the mines of Fahrul. And that's where your adventure begins. Assemble your team of four adventurers and stop the evil queen so that her reign of darkness ends. As it is a roguelite game, remember: not all of your adventurers may reach the end of this journey. Explore the maps and equip yourself, as you will encounter great dangers.

MY IMPRESSIONS

RPGs are wonderful for their range of possibilities alone, add that to the roguelite genre and you'll have hours and hours of fun. For The King 2 brings the best thing about a tabletop RPG: unpredictability. Even with clear objectives in your missions, you may end up facing challenges that are greater than you can handle. Still, you have many ways to get around adverse situations rather than being forced to live with your mistakes. And making mistakes is part of the game, as it is very difficult for you to complete a map your first time playing. The game is in Portuguese-Brazil, which is a great help in understanding all the mechanics and details of each aspect of the game. Speaking of which, despite having many factors and mechanics, the game explains in a simple way how each thing works, without complicating the player's mind too much.

The story takes place in five acts, which are the five available adventures. Each act is a different map, which always changes when playing a new game, meaning you will never have a repeat game. In addition to the main objective of the act, you can also accept secondary missions to obtain rewards and improve the power of your adventurers. Just pay attention to the events on the map, because the longer it takes you to accomplish the main objective, the more difficult the game becomes.

Combat is simple, but requires a lot of strategy. Even the weakest enemies can complicate you in some way, such as placing a curse on your character, for example. The game's art follows the path of simplicity, but with a lot of personality. I really liked what For The King 2 proposes and executes, in a fun and uncomplicated way. And because it's a roguelite, there's no way to say that it doesn't make you want to play one game after another, even if a simple run takes a long time.

ACHIEVEMENTS

I'd be lying if I said that it's easy to complete 100% of the achievements in For The King 2. Apart from the basics, which are beating the maps and finishing the main story, you'll have a long journey ahead of you, whether it's leveling up your characters, beating thousands of enemies or doing side missions. This and much more will be required to complete all achievements. Remember that it is a game where your matches take time and some events may not happen, so don't get frustrated. Just enjoy the game, most of the achievements you will get naturally in one of its many adventures.

CONCLUSION

Despite being a game with long matches, For The King 2 knows how to keep your attention. Assembling the ideal quartet of adventurers, equipping and improving them is very satisfying. The game's difficulty is just right, always keeping you alert so you don't falter. The roguelite fact makes everything even better, because even if you are defeated, you will come back stronger. It may take a long time, as the progression to unlock new characters and items is not so easy, but if you like the game, you won't even feel the time passing while you try again.

The union of RPG and roguelite is a huge success. The RPG genre, more precisely the tabletop one, is becoming increasingly popular and I hope it continues to give us good results like For The King 2. I'm curious what will come next, as it has already been announced that we will have updates, additions and even DLCs, which is cool, because I see the developers' concern in keeping the game alive and treating it with care.
