Battling with live music must be a peculiar experience, but in Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord we see that it helps a lot.
THE GAME
Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord is a tactical RPG developed by Idea Factory, Compile Heart and Sting and distributed by Idea Factory International. Years after a battle between gods, we follow Fang, a swordsman, known here as Fencer, who has the ability to handle special weapons embedded with Fairies also known as Furies. Along with his friends, Fang goes in search of gathering all the Furies in order to resurrect the Goddess who was in the conflict of gods.
MY IMPRESSIONS
Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord immediately caught my attention for being a tactical RPG. Since I love this genre, it's very easy for me to have fun with it. And, like many games in the genre, there are many details that make each one unique. Here, we have the Muses, who sing during battle to raise their status. At first, there's nothing much, but over time, both your Muse and the enemy are pretty boring. And when I say boring it's because they really don't add anything to the game, they just add a mechanic that, if it didn't exist, the game would flow even better. It seems that their turn and what they can do doesn't live up to the requirement to have them on practically every map. And noticing this is very complicated, since the name of the game refers to this mechanic as if it were the main attraction of the game. As for the rest of the mechanics, it doesn't differ much from games of this style, being even very simple.
The game is not in Brazilian-Portuguese, which may make it difficult for some players to understand some skill descriptions and the story. And speaking of the story, this one is throwaway. I wasn't attracted to reading each dialogue carefully, as many of them seem like conversations between characters from a generic anime. On the other hand, I like the character designs, as they are really unique and charismatic. The 2D arts are very beautiful, unlike the 3D, which leaves something to be desired.
The equipment is not so attractive, since few of the ones you get throughout the game are better than the ones equipped on the characters when they join your team. The variety of Sub-Fairies is cool, even if many don't seem all that useful. The system of sticking swords on the map to find items is ok, despite generating some items and dungeons, it's not that fun.
As a tactical RPG, Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord does the basics well but makes a lot of mistakes in the difference, making it a somewhat automatic game, largely because the main mechanic is very boring. Overall, it's a fun game that you can play without thinking too much and will keep you playing for a while.
ACHIEVEMENTS
For the most part, the achievements in Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord are not that difficult, but they will take some time. Half of them are tied to the story, so they'll be a breeze to complete. We also have some achievements related to specific actions, such as winning a map without taking damage or inflicting 3000 damage on an enemy in one hit. Finally, we have achievements that required a certain level of grinding, as you will have to unlock all the abilities of some Fairy and Sub-Fairy to the maximum, in addition to excavating a good part of the map, which is not small. So, just keep playing, because most of the achievements you'll get during your progression. As for getting 100%, pay attention to specific achievements and try to push them as soon as possible.
CONCLUSION
Despite the unattractive mechanics of the Muses, I had fun playing Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord. The characters are charismatic and carry the game on their shoulders, as the story does not excite. Evolving Fairies and Sub-Fairies propelled me forward in the game as I wanted to get stronger and test new tactics. I played without much pretense, just going for it, without much difficulty. I wish they had more customization options for equipment and characters. It seems that everything was focused on the Fairies and they forgot to pay more attention to other aspects of the game.
It's a shame that the game lacks in so many aspects that would make it more attractive, even more so for players who have already played the other titles in the saga. However, those who know the Idea Factory already know what they will find. Even so, it's fun to play, despite being quite generic. It's worth giving the title a chance for, who knows, a more exciting sequel to follow.
