Review: Extremely Powerful Capybaras

Capybaras are extremely cute animals, but did you know they are extremely powerful? Find out in Extremely Powerful Capybaras.

THE GAME

Extremely Powerful Capybaras is a roguelite developed by Studio Bravarda and distributed by PM Studios Inc. and Logoi Games. In search of their survival, capybaras go into battle, choosing a class and defeating the various dangers that haunt the forests. Whether playing alone or with up to four friends, battle powerful enemies, unlock and upgrade your powers to become the strongest capybara of all time!

MY IMPRESSIONS

Games inspired by Vampire Survivor are appearing more and more and that's great. The question is how to do something unique and different. In Extremely Powerful Capybaras, for me, the biggest difference is the theme. As a Brazilian, I easily picked up all the references to Brazilian culture and this makes the game interesting. In fact, the game is in Portuguese-Brazil, as the developers are Brazilian. The art is very beautiful and cartoonish, adding a humorous tone to the game.

The gameplay is simple, at first the game will seem difficult, but that's because you have few skills unlocked. Still, it is entirely possible to beat the three available maps very quickly. In fact, I missed the variety of maps. Still on this topic, the maps feature blind spots, such as walls and houses, which often obstruct vision, for example, some enemies become trapped behind these structures and you end up taking damage or even dying due to being caught by surprise.

I felt that the skills and powers were very basic and not very inspiring. Unlike the creativity in naming and referencing Brazilian culture, I thought there was a lack of good ideas in the execution of the powers. I always ended up getting the same skills, because I didn't feel like the rest made a difference or were even fun. In fact, many powers are directional, that is, they will be thrown in the direction your character is walking. In a game like this, in my opinion, these are the most boring powers to use. Class skills are also not exciting, only being interesting when evolving your class, which usually happens in the final three minutes of the map. Anyway, this aspect, in general, left something to be desired.

By completing the three maps, you release frenzy, which are modifiers for your maps, such as increasing the number of enemies or increasing their damage, for example. This adds an extra challenge to the game and helps you speed up unlocking skills. With this, we have a replay factor, but I don't know if it inspires players to continue playing after completing all the maps, I believe that only those looking to complete all the achievements will be interested.

Overall, Extremely Powerful Capybaras is a fun and creative game, only faltering in a few spots. I would like it to keep it simple and invest in diversity, like new weapon combos or perhaps new class evolutions. The pace of the game is largely dictated by time and not by the player's skill. Still, this beautiful game is worth trying.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The progression of achievements is very smooth. When you finish the three available maps, you may be close to completing all the achievements. In addition to beating the maps, we have achievements linked to spending your coins on improvements, unlocking classes, making them more powerful and playing maps with frenzy levels. It's a very easy game to get 100% of the achievements.

CONCLUSION

I like new approaches to this path that Vampire Survivor paved. And one thing that is extremely important in this genre is that it is satisfying. Whether in its mechanics, its powers or its diversity, the game has to be a pleasure to play. Extremely Powerful Capybaras has its moments of satisfaction, but the diversity left something to be desired. Not for variety, but for creativity in mechanics. I just had fun playing with the same amount of specific powers and this made the game repetitive.

Despite this, it is a game that has its merits, both in its use of Brazilian culture and in trying to put its unique touch on a genre that has been very explored lately. And as it's a game made by Brazilians, I will always strongly recommend that you play and try it out. I play more and more games from Brazilian developers and I see more and more potential in them. Even if the game is not perfect in the eyes of some, only by moving the industry and taking more and more risks will we see increasingly better and cooler games.
