Review: Ex-Zodiac

Get into your ship and fight for the freedom of the planets.

THE GAME

Ex-Zodiac is a spaceship game developed by MNKY and published by Pixeljam. Pilot Kyuu has only one mission: to fight for the freedom of the planets of the Sanzaru star system. Aboard her ship, Kyuu will battle against the terrorist organization Zodiac, which will send the most deadly combat machines to stop our pilot.

Pilot through different environments.

MY IMPRESSIONS

With colorful, retro, low-poly art, Ex-Zodiac brings a lot of fun space action. In addition to a soundtrack that brings back nostalgia, it's impossible not to remember Star Fox when watching this game. The fast-paced action throws you headfirst into battles and you, as the pilot, must always be alert, whether it's to the enemies that appear on the screen or to the scenario itself that will require mastery in evasion. Improvements can be found as the levels progress, such as faster and stronger shots or more missiles for your arsenal. The game is not in Brazilian Portuguese, which can make the player lose some of the context of the game's story, but this has little impact on the gameplay. In addition to your ship, some levels put you in other vehicles, which give a new feel to the level, without changing the standard gameplay too much. The control customization allows you to play with either the controller or the mouse and keyboard, so you can play the way you like the most. In my case, I played with the mouse and keyboard, because the shots are more precise and the movement more fluid. With a good pace and lots of fun, Ex-Zodiac will keep you entertained.

Flying motorcycles are so cool.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Ex-Zodiac's achievements are based on three tasks: defeating bosses, collecting hidden chips, and achieving an S rank in all stages. The last one is the one that will take the most work, as it will require mastery to achieve an S rank, since to do so you must avoid taking damage, destroy as many enemies as possible, and defeat the stage's boss as quickly as possible. With that, you will have a good challenge to complete all the achievements.

Having a good evasion will be essential.

CONCLUSION

We don't see many spaceship games like this in the gaming market. The pace of the game helps a lot with the fun factor, which makes the game fast and challenging in the right measure. Initially, playing only with the keyboard, I had a lot of difficulty playing, but when I discovered that I had the option to aim with the mouse, it became a different game for me. Moving the ship with the mouse turns you into a true galactic pilot. The retro visuals and soundtrack are the draw for Ex-Zodiac, which rewards those who came for these factors, delivering a very fun game. The game is in early access at the time of this review, with levels being added little by little, but I say it's worth playing now and following Ex-Zodiac's evolution.

SCORE: 8.0/10
