Review: Deck 'Em!

Updated: Jul 6, 2023

Maybe you don't like playing Solitaire, but what if the cards were boxers? Sounds crazy, but that's what you'll find in Deck 'Em!

THE GAME

Deck 'Em! is a card game from Frosty Pop. The game consists of a boxing match that revolves around cards, almost like a game of Solitaire. Your fighter, who is also a card, must endure twelve rounds against the champion to win. Every round, four cards will be dealt, and you have to use them all to go to the next round. The deck has 52 cards, and each of them has an important function. Use them wisely or your fighter will be defeated.

MY IMPRESSIONS

Deck 'Em! is a very simple game. Your goal is to clear the deck of 52 cards by using the card mechanics wisely and preventing your fighter from being defeated. And it is even too simple. If you pay attention to the game's explanation, you'll get the hang of it in no time. The blocking mechanics, for example, are the most important. If you go through it without paying attention, you can get into trouble. It is worth remembering that, at the time of this review, the game does not have subtitles in Portuguese-Brazil.

The art in the game is very nice. A cartoon style that I like a lot. The narrator has his animations well done and reacts to what happens in the game. His fighter card also suffers visibly when he is beaten.

Just as he is described as a "Boxing Patience," you will not win every match. For those who play Patience, as I do, you know that at the advanced levels there is the possibility of a match being unwinnable. No matter what move you make, the way the cards are dealt makes the game impossible to win. Here, it is the same idea, but for some reason it is more frustrating than its ancestor. However, when you win in Deck 'Em! it is liberating.

The game has a ranking, because with each match you receive a score in the form of money, as if it were your profit from the fight. This is your score on the overall leaderboard, where you can see where you and other players rank. It is a way to keep the replay factor of the game, because, as I said, the game is very simple. In my case, I didn't care much about the ranking, I played many games and lost many.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Unfortunately, the game has no achievements at the time of this review. If there is some future change, I will make an update. Sad for the achievement hunters.

CONCLUSION

It's a game with an interesting idea, but it runs out quickly. I think if it had more card types or different mechanics for each fighter, the replay factor would be higher. As much as the matches are fast, this feeling of having jinxed the deck is frustrating. Losing by using the cards less effectively is one thing. Losing simply because the cards were dealt in such a way that it is impossible to win is another. We are in a virtual game, I don't want it to be a real casino. After a few games, the repetition becomes monotonous and the constant defeats are discouraging. In some of those defeats, I had no idea if it was because I played badly or if it was just bad luck.

The ranking is there just to be an incentive to play more matches. I don't think many people will care about that. Anyway, it's a game to play once in a while, about three games and that's it.

SCORE: 5.0/10
