Review: Cook Serve Forever

When playing Cook Serve Forever, I recommend having a snack before starting, as you will be very hungry.

THE GAME

Cook Serve Forever is a cooking simulator developed and distributed by Vertigo Gaming Inc. We took over the kitchen in the shoes of Nori, a cook who, since she was a child, had the support of her mother to get her hands dirty in the kitchen, literally. She is the biggest fan of Rhubarb, a renowned chef who has her own television show and is Nori's inspiration. When the famous chef announces a big culinary competition, Nori and her girlfriend Brie leave everything behind and go in pursuit of their dream of winning the biggest culinary prize and, at the same time, getting out of financial tightness.

MY IMPRESSIONS

I really like the Cook, Serve, Delicious series! and how it evolved. If you've played it too, I should warn you: this game is NOT a sequel. It's important to warn you because if you expect something similar to other games, you might be disappointed. The idea here is to continue a universe, creating a gameplay variation. The game is in early access, that is, a lot can change. Keep this in mind.

When playing, I felt like I was watching an animation that you would find in the Netflix catalogue. With wonderful voice acting and beautiful art, the game's story really immerses you. Speaking of art, food continues to be represented in a delicious way. Impossible not to salivate when seeing your finished dishes. At the moment, the game does not have Brazilian-Portuguese subtitles, unfortunately. Even, at times, while you are cooking, dialogues happen and, if you don't have a good ear to understand English, you end up missing some interactions.

I confess that the new style of gameplay was like a roller coaster for me. Initially, I didn't see much of a problem, the whole mechanic of button sequences for each type of ingredient was interesting. In the end, perhaps because it was in early access and with a very small amount of content, the main mechanics of the game started to get tiresome. Repetition after repetition. Hopefully, when the game is complete, there will be ways to make the game more dynamic and varied.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The achievements available so far will require some patience. The most annoying thing to do are the level achievements, which consist of reaching a certain level in each location and receiving your stickers. As I said earlier, the game is very repetitive at this point. Even with the bonuses that help you level up, it's going to be pretty tiring.

With the next updates, new achievements should appear and they will probably follow the same level idea, however, in the new locations that will be released. I hope that, somehow, mechanics are implemented that make this grind more dynamic and less boring.

CONCLUSION

Cook Serve Forever comes as a different approach of another games and I don't see that as a bad thing, however, the game needs a lot of dynamism. At the moment, the game is a lot of repetition and little variation. I understand that new content will be implemented, but what makes me curious is whether we will have something more in the game's core mechanics. Many times I didn't even know what recipe I was making, because the focus on pressing the correct buttons and quickly makes you simply forget the main point of the game, which is the food.

Even with all of the above, I know what developers are capable of. The quality is maintained in everything, but they need to come up with new ideas to spice up the game a little more and give more prominence to the process and final result of the recipes.

The characters and the story are pretty cool. This differential gives the game a charm and reminds us that here the approach is different. I like to think I'm playing an animated series, because that's how I feel when watching the cutscenes. An interesting curiosity is that all characters are named after ingredients, such as: Nori, Brie and Rhubarb.

As a fan of the Cook Serve Delicious! series, I'm excited to see where this new journey takes us. I don't mind the style change at all, it's good to freshen up the air and expand the series. I just hope we get significant improvements. The game has potential and I'm sure that with the next updates it will improve a lot.
