THE GAME
Chicken Police: Into the HIVE! is an investigation game developed by The Wild Gentlemen and published by Joystick Ventures. Investigating Clawville, Sonny and Marty, two chicken investigators, are taken to the Hive, a place where all the insects have been forced to live. A big case is happening there and our investigators will soon realize that it is something bigger than they imagined. Immerse yourself in this noir world full of anthropomorphized animals to discover what mysteries the streets of Clawville hold.
MY IMPRESSIONS
After its predecessor, Chicken Police - Paint it RED!, we return to follow Sonny and Marty in yet another investigation. Since I had already played the first title, I can clearly see how things have evolved from one game to the next. And I can't start talking about this game without mentioning its art. I really like how both the characters and the settings are done. The characters with their human bodies and animal heads in a realistic style (or as close to realistic as you can get) are incredible and leave you with that uncomfortable feeling as if it weren't right, but it works so well. This is more evident in scenes that seem to be live action and make everything more alive. The settings don't fall behind, always in a noir atmosphere, as if you were in an old cop movie. The soundtrack helps to set the mood masterfully, which makes the whole experience even better. Unlike the previous title, where only some elements had color, here we have some sequences that are completely colored. In both cases, these details are used as elements that help in the narrative.
The gameplay maintains its spirit, however, with a freshness, both in its visuals and in its mechanics. Exploration and some puzzles are still found here, which are basically the soul of an investigative game. I won't go into too much detail about the story because a big part of the fun of this game is understanding and being intrigued by what is being told, but for those who played the first game in the series, it will continue to be at the same level and it will be even more interesting to continue following Sonny and his dilemmas. For those who are starting the series with this game, there is no problem, because it is perfectly possible to follow the story and situate yourself in the context. Unlike its predecessor, the game is in Brazilian Portuguese, which is essential for a game entirely based on texts, because when I played Chicken Police - Paint it RED! even though I knew English, it was quite tiring to play and mentally translate everything I read. This expansion of the Chicken Police universe is very interesting, because here they present more about the city, about what happened in the past and its current consequences. The characters, in addition to being well-personified visually as previously mentioned, are incredibly dubbed, even if only in English, but they enrich each character immensely, since this way we can better understand each one's personality, making everything much more immersive and sentimental. For those who enjoy a good investigation, the kind that starts with a grain of sand and becomes a storm in the middle of the desert, this will be a great adventure.
ACHIEVEMENTS
In addition to the story-related achievements, there are some that will require your explorer's instinct to be sharp. My tip is: press everything possible in the scenario. Collectible achievements in this type of game can be a bit annoying, because if you miss one, you'll have a lot of work to go after later. Talking to all the characters until you run out of lines is also important to advance in your achievements. Completing secondary objectives, doing the alternative ending and doing some specific actions are just a few more achievements that may require you to play through at least a second time to complete the achievements. Since its previous title, Chicken Police has very broad achievements and, although it may take time, I recommend completing the game without thinking too much about completing all the achievements at once, because otherwise you'll have to use a guide and won't enjoy the game. So, live Chicken Police: Into the HIVE and after that, go for the achievements.
CONCLUSION
As I said before, I had already played the previous title in the Chicken Police saga and I really liked it. I didn't imagine that they would expand the universe and I was very happy when I saw that a sequel would be released. What I liked most was that the developers kept everything we saw before, but with a new look, showing that they care about improving. The story is intriguing and draws several parallels with our world, which also influences your actions during investigations and interrogations. I want to see where this created world will go and I'm sure the developers are already working on it. It has the potential to continue doing a good job and creating a very good series of investigative games.
