Review: Batboy

Playing a game that is inspired by old games is always a pleasure. When I visited the great Shovel Knight, which definitely should be the standard for rescuing a gameplay style and modernizing it in a decent way, it was then that years later I had the opportunity to play Batboy, a game also inspired by 8-bit games. Would he be able to rescue the success of one of the best eras of games?

Batboy was developed and published by the X PLUS Company and managed to be released through crowdfunding on Kickstarter, managing to raise about 250 thousand dollars for the development and marketing of the game.

The game is available on the following platforms: Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, Mac OS, Playstation 4 and Playstation 5.

STORY

With a variety of sports characters as protagonists and antagonists of the main story, we are placed in the shoes of Ryosuke, and we need to rescue our friends from brainwashing, bringing them back to our side. Batboy is very much like an anime story and draws heavily from that source in that regard. VISUAL

Batboy is a very intuitive game in its visuals. It seems that we are playing an old-fashioned game, but, of course, with all the modern gameplay and current fluidity. Batboy has some pretty cool cutscenes, but they're few. The design of each of the bosses is quite unique and they are easily recognizable by their unique and varied abilities. Very varied scenarios and with an incredible and well-diversified range of colors, Batboy is very colorful and beautiful within its proposal, leaving nothing to be desired for more prestigious games in the sequel.

GAMEPLAY

In Batboy there are several types of gameplay mechanics and as the story progresses, we defeat some bosses and acquire powers related to the defeated boss, such as, for example, dash, create a bubble in the water to survive submerged longer, etc.

It's pretty clear that there's a Megaman inspiration in that regard and the game applies that very capably, however, I felt that the early mechanics with the bat lost some of their luster over time and if there was a progression related to that , it would be amazing.

The fact is that Batboy adopts many mechanics that make gameplay much easier, including the fight with bosses that could be more difficult. I even thought that some paths were more difficult than the final fight with the Boss.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Batboy's achievements are relatively simple related to his progress, but there are four common collectibles within each of the phases with the exception of the last one, which are three seeds, one of each color, two corresponding to the location and challenge of collecting them, some they are really well hidden, so you will probably have to go back in some stages to find some that will be left behind, the other one is with a buy NPC that sells this seed for 300 coins. And we also have the cassette tape, which usually stays in a puzzle made just for it within the dynamics of the level itself. There are also some cute puppies that need to be rescued and they are much more hidden than the other collectibles. I have to say that personally, I hate collectibles that are hidden like this.

OFFICIAL TRAILER
CONCLUSION

Batboy can be both challenging and frustrating, the game has a high difficulty, but often because of the inaccurate hit-box and unnaturally delayed movements, there seems to be a little input lag in the game that we don't have much to understand why. , perhaps something related to the applied engine. I believed that the mechanic of hitting the balls with the bat would be better applied, but unfortunately it is something that we end up not using as much as the game goes on, some mechanics are a little behind and do not evolve with our own progress. Despite the problems involved in the mechanics, Batboy is a fun game, which tells a very cool story, the game hits a lot in the variety of bosses and unique abilities of each one of them.
